Rose Queen
Participatory art project with members of the 2nd Alexandra Park Guides. South Manchester (2013).
A participatory art project exploring contemporary traditions and community-making, undertaken over a period of six months in 2013 with members of the 2nd Alexandra Park Guides from Whalley Range, South Manchester.
The project staged a consciously contemporary revival of the historical Manley Park Rose Queen Festival, which took place annually in Whalley Range during the 1930s - 1970s. Drawing on conversations with local people who had previously taken part—in particular with Janet Smith, who was crowned Rose Queen in 1966—participants re-envisaged the event at a “coronation” held in front of a local audience at Manley Park Methodist Church in July 2013.
